Find a Specialist

A specialist is a veterinarian who is Board-certified in a clinical specialty recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Established in 1973, the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) is the international certifying organization for veterinary specialists in large animal internal medicine, small animal internal medicine, cardiology, neurology and oncology. The organization is leading the way in the practice of veterinary medicine and in studies to further advancements in the treatment of animal disease. ACVIM delivers quality specialized veterinary medical services to the public by:

  • Monitoring veterinary residency programs
  • Maintaining fair and reasonable examination standards
  • Abiding by a policy for humane care of animals
  • Promoting and funding medical studies

Who are ACVIM members?

ACVIMACVIM has more than 1,800 active members, called ACVIM Diplomates, who are Board-certified specialists. These specialists have dedicated 3 to 6 years of their professional career to advanced training in veterinary medicine. Only veterinarians who have successfully completed ACVIM's rigorous training and testing requirements are certified as Diplomates, and have earned the right to be called Board-certified specialists in veterinary internal medicine.

ACVIM Diplomates treat many different species, ranging from dogs and cats to horses and cattle.

Read More About ACVIM Specialty Medicine

Specialty veterinary medicine is a new concept to many animal owners. The ACVIM and ACVIM Foundation have created the Veterinary Healthcare Team kit in order to help educate the public about specialty medicine, the referral process, and how your animal can benefit from combined treatment by the Veterinary Healthcare Team. In an effort to ensure that our awareness efforts continue to grow and expand, proceeds from the sales of the Veterinary Healthcare Team Brochures will benefit the ACVIM Foundation. Both the ACVIM and the ACVIM Foundation are focused on serving the Diplomate community and ensuring that organizational resources are maximized to achieve the greatest outcome in specialty medicine, public awareness, and overall animal health. We thank you for your ongoing support. Please feel free to contact us anytime with questions or feedback. Please stay tuned for updates on new Veterinary Healthcare Team Campaign Initiatives offered to all Diplomates by the ACVIM and the ACVIM Foundation.

Non-ACVIM Specialists

In addition to the ACVIM, the AVMA recognizes several other veterinary specialties such as dermatology, radiology, emergency and critical care, and nutrition.

How Do I Find a Specialist?

Please use the list below to locate a specialist. The ACVIM Foundation encourages animal owners to obtain a referral from their regular veterinarian whenever possible. This ensures the proper transfer of medical information and is beneficial to the animal and the specialty veterinarian and will help your companion receive the best care possible.
